WALLER — Beaumont West Brook point guard Elijah Garrett was as good as advertised.

The Bruins' 6-foot point guard scored a game-high 27 points Tuesday night as West Brook defeated Glenn 63-35 in a Class 5A Division I state semifinal game at Waller ISD Gym.

Glenn's historic 30-win season came to an end against West Brook, which advances to Saturday's state championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Tuesday's semifinal was never close. The Bruins (34-3) contested nearly every Glenn shot and forced numerous Grizzlies turnovers that led to easy buckets.

Glenn's loss leaves one Central Texas boys team left standing: Westlake, which bounced Houston Cypress Falls 59-27 Tuesday in Mumford and will play in Saturday's Class 6A DI championship game.

The Grizzlies finished with a 30-10 record.

"To our credit, the players worked hard every day this season," Glenn coach Jon Ortiz said. "We practice at 6 a.m., we have everyone there. They come in and do everything we ask them to do. They're great kids."

West Brook looked just as good as the Bruins team that won last year's Class 5A DI state title, an overtime victory over Birdville at the Alamodome. On Tuesday, Garrett scored 15 of his 27 points in the first half to help the Bruins nab a 33-18 lead at the break. Westbrook also got notable performances by Quinton Parker (13 points) and Hudson Roberts (11).

As for Glenn, the Grizzlies were led by guard Orden Roberts, who popped in 10 points. No one else scored in double figures.

After the game, Ortiz gave ample credit to Garrett for his spectacular night. He noted that Garrett made about five "highly-contested, off-balance shots" that any team would have had trouble defending.

Ortiz also gave credit to Glenn's girls basketball team, which reached last week's 5A DI championship game at the Alamdome. The Glenn girls were the first team in school history to reach the state finals in a team sport.

Ortiz also noted that he has a good nucleus of players returning next year as well as players who'll come off successful freshman and junior varsity seasons.
